National cup 2013

We begin our journey to retain the National cup V St Marys Castleisland in November. We met them last season in the cup and it was a great game.

We also played them recently in the Kilkenny tournament which we won comfortably but its preseason so nothing can be take from those type of games. More information on the quest to repeat will follow.

With five games already under our belt the Thunder really get the pre season under way with only four weekends left until our season opener away to Donegal on the 29th Sept. The Thunder have been asked to play in the Superleague pre season tournament taking place in the a National Basketball Arena Tallaght Dublin 24 where they will match up as follows:

Sept 7th-9th
Thunder v DCU St Vincent’s Fri 630 pm
Thunder v Killester Sat 6pm
Thunder v Ballon Sun 2pm

Then on the 15th of sept we fly out to play the Plymouth Raiders of the BBL who are fancied to be the top team in England next season after a heavy recruiting spree including securing the services of Irish International Colin O’ Reilly who captained the Jets last season. Schedule as follows:

Sat 15th & Sun 16th
Thunder v Raiders Sat 8pm
Thunder Raiders  Sun 11am

Then the weekend of the 21st-23rd we travel to Belfast to defend our ESPN crown. In our pool are UCD, Star, Eanna, Queens and Thunder so will be a very tough group for us but as always we are up for the challenge.

We have some new faces for the coming season so keep watching out for the new roster and pictures which will be announced by the 25th in time for our opening game of our first national league season. We have also been drawn v St Mary’s Castle island to be played on the weekend of Nov 10/11 In our first cup game to try and repeat as National league Cup Winners 2013.

At this point we would also like to thank Thunder players from last seasons teams and wish them the very best in their future. Ever players made some contribution to the team none more then the Thunder captain Glenn Wong who will be missed greatly on the hardwood this season, a true gentleman on and off the court and will always have a home with the Thunder here in Ireland.

Another player that needs a mention was our young gun last season Davey O’Leary who has travelled to sunny Florida and is attending the University of Tampa this season where coaches Schmidt & Pecka will insure Davey improves and reaches his true potential. Watch out for updates on his progress.

The club are delighted to announce that they will be competing in the basketball Ireland national league next season.

The team are back training Aug 1st with preseason schedule kicking off on the 16th Aug with our first home game of the preseason on Aug 26th at 8pm v redline college USA.
